The Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Canadian Football League community are mourning the tragic passing of Jayden Dalke, a 30-year-old linebacker and team captain who died in a fatal highway crash near Lumsden, Saskatchewan.
According to the Saskatchewan RCMP, officers responded to the collision around 9 p.m. CST on Saturday after Dalke’s silver SUV collided with another vehicle on Highway 11 between Regina and Lumsden.
Police said their investigation found that Dalke had been driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the divided highway when his SUV collided with a black SUV driven by Bhishma Rajyaguru, 22, of Regina. Both drivers were the only occupants of their vehicles and were pronounced dead following the crash.
RCMP said alcohol and cannabis were found inside Dalke’s vehicle. Authorities are continuing their investigation, including collision reconstruction and toxicology testing, with further details expected as the investigation progresses.
The crash has brought deep sadness to teammates, family members, friends, and supporters who knew Dalke as a dedicated athlete and respected member of the Roughriders organization.
Dalke, who was from Leduc, Alberta, was selected by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the sixth round of the 2022 CFL Draft. He became known for his toughness, reliability, and commitment to his teammates both on and off the field.
Roughriders general manager Jeremy O’Day paid tribute to Dalke, describing him as someone who always wanted to do his best for the team and never wanted to let those around him down.
“In football he was tough and reliable, accountable. Never wanted to let anyone down. He was someone that always wanted to do good for his teammates,” O’Day said.
The organization extended its condolences to Dalke’s family, friends, and everyone affected by the tragedy.
The death of Bhishma Rajyaguru has also left his family, friends, and community devastated. Friends described him as a kind and caring person whose loss has created an unimaginable void. A fundraiser was started to help return his remains to his family in India.
RCMP officials have urged the public to show compassion and respect toward both families as they grieve the sudden loss of their loved ones.
Jayden Dalke will be remembered for his dedication to football, his leadership, and the impact he made on those who had the opportunity to know him. His passing leaves a lasting loss for the Saskatchewan Roughriders community and all who followed his career.
