Deke passed away following a medical emergency on Saturday, July 18, leaving family, friends, former campers, colleagues, and members of the Christian camping community grieving the loss of a man remembered for his compassion, humility, and unwavering commitment to serving others.
Throughout his life, Deke dedicated himself to nurturing the faith and personal growth of young people through Christian camping and outdoor ministry. His passion for creating meaningful experiences for campers and staff made him a respected and beloved figure within the communities he served.
Deke faithfully served at Wesley Woods in various leadership roles, including as Site Director from 2007 to 2017. During his time there, he helped guide generations of campers and staff through programs centered on faith, friendship, and spiritual growth.
Later, as Executive Director of Camp Hebron, Deke continued his mission of providing a place where young people could strengthen their relationship with Christ, build lasting friendships, and experience the impact of a caring faith community.
Those who knew Deke described him as a humble and approachable leader who always made people feel welcomed and valued. He was known for his servant’s heart, his ability to encourage others, and his willingness to offer guidance and support whenever needed.
Whether leading camp activities, mentoring staff members, or spending time with campers, Deke demonstrated kindness, integrity, and a genuine love for people.
